REC Silicon is our operating division producing solar grade silicon, electronic grade silicon and silane gas. These products are raw materials for the international solar and electronic industries. We are a leading global player in the production of high purity silicon materials, with 25 years of polysilicon manufacturing expertise.
| REC Silicon operates two US-based plants, employing about 750 staff in Moses Lake, Washington and Butte, Montana. These facilities had an annual capacity of 6 500 MT of polysilicon and 9 000 MT of silane gas in 2008. Two new plants are under construction in Moses Lake which will give REC Silicon an additional 10 500 MT of polysilicon capacity coming online by the end of 2010.
REC holds the rights to unique and proprietary polysilicon production technology based on monosilane gas, which is a closed-loop process almost eliminating the production of by-products or waste materials. We have made substantial investments in new technology which features polysilicon desposition in Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) instead of the more traditional thermal deposition furnaces, the "Siemens reactors". The new technology will reduce energy consumption in the silane to polysilicon step by 80-90 percent, and thereby lower production costs.
The REC Silicon plants are ISO 9002-registered manufacturing facilities.
